Saif Ali Khan: ‘I have been a victim of nepotism’

"Even I have been a victim of nepotism but nobody speaks of that"

Update : 02 Jul 2020, 03:40 PM

Saif Ali khan, son of veteran actor Sharmila Tagore and former captain of the Indian cricket team, Tiger Pataudi, have recently weighed in on the nepotism debate, sparked by Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide, with an interesting take that left Twitter buzzing.

In an interview with The New Indian Express, Khan said: "There is inequality in India that needs to be explored. Nepotism, favouritism and camps are different subjects. Even I have been a victim of nepotism but nobody speaks of that. I'm happy to see more people from film institutes come to the forefront."

Unsurprisingly, his statement has not been received warmly by netizens. To this day, Bollywood buffs insist that Shah Rukh Khan has been snubbed for his performance in Swades at the National Film Awards in 2004, whereas Saif Ali Khan bagged the award for Best Actor for his performance in the romantic comedy Hum Tum

Many of these people on Twitter have gone on to speculate that Sharmila Tagore's office as chief of the Censor Board had contributed to her son’s win in 2004.

Saif Ali Khan has not explained further how it is that he had been discriminated in the film industry.

The actor had previously sided with Kangana Ranaut when she openly talked about nepotism and called out a few Bollywood biggies, including Karan Johar. However, Khan now claims that he had no idea what Ranaut was talking about at the time. Later, the actor said that people unfairly confused nepotism with "eugenics and genetics."

Khan made a cameo appearance in Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara, the Indian remake of The Fault in Our Stars. In an interview to The Times of India, he reminisced his pleasant experiences of working alongside Sushant, but said that he found the late actor ‘a little on the edge’.

Saif’s daughter, Sara Ali Khan, who made her film debut opposite Sushant in Kedarnath, according to reports, was shaken by her co-star’s death.
