Disney-Marvel’s superhero film “Thor: Ragnarok” is heading for a stellar opening weekend with $121 million. With an opening in 4,080 North American screens, according to Variety, the “Thor” sequel became the fourth best launch of 2017.
The film’s stellar opening in fact helped Hollywood battering the recent downturn in the box office by already cutting the decline to 4.8% as of Sunday, Variety reports.
“November has been a hotbed for blockbusters and is as important to any given year as even the hottest summer months; it’s been the launch pad for some of the biggest franchises in box office history including ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Twilight,’ not to mention the traditional home for James Bond,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore.
“Now Thor joins the rarefied air that is the $100 million November opening club, becoming only the ninth film to ever reach this threshold and the first to do it within the first part of the month.”
Warner Bros-DC Entertainment’s conjoint “Justice League” along with Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which are going to be released in November 17 and December 15, respectively, are expected to keep the positive momentum going.
With Chris Hemsworth reprising the title role, “Thor: Ragnarok” chronicles an imprisoned God of Thunder, who finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his world and the Asgardian civilisation.
Directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, the film also features Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.
“Thor: Ragnarok” premiered in Los Angeles on October 10 and was released worldwide on November 3. The film received largely positive reviews and is even tagged as the best film in the “Thor” trilogy, with specific praise going to Waititi's direction, the cast, action sequences, music, and humour.
So far, the best-reviewed flick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grossed more than $427 million worldwide.
