River erosion destroying arable land

Update : 18 May 2014, 07:35 PM

At least 3,666 hectares of fertile land and 485 hectares of settlement on both sides of the bank of Jamuna, Ganges, Padma and lower Maghna rivers will disappear intro river water because of erosion.

The river erosion will also render as many as 35 thousand people landless. In 2013 the Jamuna, Ganges and Padma eroded about 3190 hectare of cultivable land.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) have prepared a prediction report in April this year analysing satellite images.

The report says that around 137 establishments including 64 educational institutions, eight government offices and 41 mosques of 21 districts located on the banks of those four rivers will disappear.

Maximum 55 educational institutions of seven districts, including Bogra, will go under water from either side of Jamuna River bank.

The BWDB Bogra Circle Office sources said the department identified several vulnerable points including Chandanvaisha under Shariakand upazila in Bogra district and BahokaSimla in Sirajganj Sadar upazila.

AKM Momtaz Uddin, superintending Engineer of the BDWD, Bogra said Jamuna river erosion threatens around 4 kilometres of embankment along the right bank of Chandanvaisha area.

“We have invited tender for 25000 Geo-textile bags to protect river erosion in Bogra,” said Momtaz Uddin.

BWDB and CEGIES sources said at least 1,79,257 hectares of cultivable land was eroded between 1974 and 2014.

BWDB and CEGIES predicted that around 8,596 meters of road will be completely destroyed this year.

According to the previous publication of the CEGIS the rate of erosion by the Jamuna River was 5,000 hectares a year in the 1980s in areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajgang, Tangail and Manikganj districts.

While erosion by the Padma River was 2,300 hectares a year in the 1990s in Faridpur,Shariatpur, Dhaka, Madaripur and Manikganj districts.
