Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has truly captured the imagination of the Bangladeshi people since being tasked with leading the rebuild of our nation in the wake of Sheikh Hasina fleeing the nation on August 5 -- and his latest address to the nation on September 5 further solidified that sentiment.
Speaking a month after the country was left in a state of chaos, yet with renewed hope and jubilation, Yunus recalling over and over again the plight of the martyred, the brave young men and women who stood up against the autocratic regime of the Awami League, exemplified his connection with the people of the country -- a stark departure from the leaders of the Awami League who had all but disconnected from the people they had sworn to serve.
Equally appreciated are his words about bringing those responsible for the killings in July and August to justice; for Bangladesh to collectively heal as a nation and be able to move on from the multiple weeks of brutality we witnessed, it is imperative that those responsible be held accountable. Of similar importance is the mention of those who have quite literally looted our resources and left our finances in tatters, and the need to bring those individuals to book as well.
Sheikh Hasina left the nation in a broken state, and it will take patience and cooperation and unity to fix. With that said, we hope that, collectively as a nation, we too can have the conviction with which Yunus speaks as he not only talks of the need for unity during this most challenging time in our nation’s history, but takes the steps that will rebuild Bangladesh in the image that the people have always wanted.
