Reinforcing our ties with Bhutan

A key area of interest should be the field of renewable energy

Update : 28 Mar 2024, 11:41 AM
In the light of Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck's state visit to Bangladesh, it is encouraging to see that both nations, with their rich cultural heritages and burgeoning economies, are looking to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship - which holds immense potential to propel both countries to the next level of growth and prosperity.

Multiple memorandum of understandings (MoUs) have been signed between the two nations, ranging from collaboration in the health sector where Bhutanese medical students have long been studying in Bangladeshi public medical colleges, to establishing Bhutanese Special Economic Zone in Kurigram, Bangladesh.

A key area of interest should be the field of renewable energy. Bhutan, with its abundant hydropower resources, can export clean energy to Bangladesh, helping us meet our growing energy demands sustainably. This can not only strengthen energy security but also play its part in helping to stave off the adverse effects of climate change to a certain extent.

With Bhutan being the very first nation to recognize Bangladesh as an independent country on December 6, 1971, it goes without saying that this is a friendship that began even before we were formally an independent nation. As such, it is our duty to explore mutually beneficial opportunities across all sectors, but especially when it comes to bilateral trade and connectivity; ensuring better regional and sub-regional connectivity is the foundation for enhanced economic integration, trade, and commerce.

These are all signs of pro-active diplomacy that we have come to expect from Bangladesh; after all, it is through strengthening existing partnerships and exploring newer ones will we remain on track to fulfil all of our goals and ambitions.
