Harnessing the power of the sun

We must remain steadfast in our commitment to a brighter and more sustainable future

Update : 29 Dec 2023, 01:59 PM

The recent announcement that the government has approved proposals to set up four solar power plants to generate 420 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the next 20 years is surely a beacon of hope and could be a pivotal moment in our quest for a more sustainable and reliable power grid.

Bangladesh has long struggled to meet its growing energy demands, often relying on conventional sources that contribute to environmental degradation. While our reliance on fossil fuels is unfortunately not going any time soon, the advent of solar power plants is a stride towards cleaner, greener energy, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Thus, we not only showcase our commitment to environmental stewardship but also the potential to position Bangladesh, which continues to be one of the most affected nations due to climate change, as a trailblazer in the region for renewable energy adoption.

However, to ensure the success of this venture, it is imperative to remain vigilant and resolute in adhering to a well-defined course. Transparency in the project's execution is paramount, and any discrepancies, which are regrettably a hallmark for our projects, must be promptly addressed. Robust oversight mechanisms must be established to monitor the project's progress, ensuring that it stays true to its goals and delivers on its promises.

While the prospects of a solar-powered future for Bangladesh are exciting, challenges loom on the horizon. For starters, the government, in collaboration with private stakeholders, must invest in advanced storage technologies to mitigate the impact of fluctuations in solar power generation.

With Bangladesh on the cusp of graduating to a middle income nation, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to a brighter and more sustainable future. Harnessing the power of the sun and simultaneously addressing the subsequent potential challenges head-on will help Bangladesh illuminate not only its cities but also pave the way for a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous nation.
