Lead pollution must not rob us of our future

Lead pollution threatens the very future of our nation

Update : 16 Sep 2023, 09:19 AM
It is alarming to learn that Bangladesh is the fourth most lead pollution-impacted country in the world, with its future generations facing severe ramifications as a result of it, jeopardizing their growth and intellectual potential.

In new research published in the Lancet, not only is Bangladesh facing significant IQ loss and the stunting of physical growth among children due to lead pollution but also cardiovascular disease death among adults.

Some of the findings are truly shocking -- 138,054 cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths among adults aged 25 years or older due to lead exposure exceeded the previous estimation with a four times higher mortality rate while the combined cost of these health effects was $28,633 million which is a loss of 6% to 9% of the country’s GDP as measured in 2019.

Suffice to say, we must take action, with immediate effect.

Lead is ubiquitous in our environment, leaching into soil, water, and even the air we breathe. However, the most alarming aspect is the way it infiltrates the young, targeting the most vulnerable among us.

In a nation where education will continue to be most important as a means of empowerment and progress, lead pollution threatens to rob not just our future generations of their intellectual vitality, but in doing so, threatens the very future of our nation.

What compounds this crisis is the lack of awareness and effective regulation. While some initiatives have been launched to curb lead exposure, stronger enforcement and public education are urgently needed. It is a shared responsibility -- government, industry, and civil society must be united to fight this issue.

Bangladesh's promise lies in the untapped potential of its youth, and it's our moral obligation to ensure they thrive without the silent threat of lead pollution. The time for action is now.
