Our future relies on renewable sources of energy

Speed up the shift to renewable energy options

Update : 30 Nov 2022, 11:07 PM

While the world continues to collectively grapple with a severe energy crisis, developing countries are unfortunately the ones most vulnerable to its consequences.

Bangladesh -- despite having done a tremendous job so far of withstanding the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war -- stands the risk of stunted economic growth if the current scenario persists. On the bright side, however, the fuel crisis has led most countries to reevaluate their energy options, and can potentially reshape energy consumption worldwide.

To that end, Bangladesh taking pro-active measures to speed up the shift to renewable energy options is undoubtedly a positive sign, and offers hope for a more stable future.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power signed a non-binding MoU on Monday, with the aim to establish a 1,000MW solar power plant in the country. The project, with technological and financial support from ACWA Power and the BPDB's administrative support, could substantially ease our energy woes at a time like this.

While the Bangladeshi government has taken necessary measures to cushion the blow of a potentially devastating crisis, it goes without saying that the current solutions are far from sustainable. Therefore, it is extremely encouraging to see the government recognizing the importance of, and acting upon, establishing renewable energy options.

Bangladesh is on the verge of graduating from its LDC status, and it is crucial -- especially at this point in time -- that we keep up our momentum. We must also acknowledge that renewable energy is truly the future, and having reliable options in place will ensure that we can overcome any future power crises.

We sincerely hope that the authorities involved follow through with this project with the sincerity and urgency that it demands, and that more of such initiatives are undertaken, so our country's progress is not made to come to a standstill.
