BNP hopeful of holding Nov 7 rally

Update : 02 Nov 2016, 07:44 PM
“We have already sought permission from the authorities concerned to hold a rally in Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7. We hope we will get the permission, as the government still have not said anything negative about it,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing on Wednesday. The briefing was held at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office after a meeting of the party’s central leaders of Dhaka and its adjacent districts aimed at making the rally a success, reports UNB. On October 20, the party announced a 10-day programme, including the rally, to observe what it calls ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’. However, some leaders of the ruling Awami League, including its Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, said their party would not allow BNP to observe its November 7 programmes, as many army members had been killed on the day in the name of so-called revolt by soldiers. About the AL leaders’ comments, Fakhrul said they thought those were their personal remarks and not the official lines of their party or the government. But Fakhrul alleged that the government was trying to create obstacles to their programme. “The houses of our leaders and activists are being raided by law enforcers centring on the rally. The government is indulging in such activities as it does not believe in democracy,” he added. The BNP leader expected that the government would cooperate in exercising their democratic rights. Amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians on November 7, 1975 jointly freed the then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment, paving the way for Zia to come to power. While BNP and its alliances celebrate November 7 as the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’, Awami League and its front organisations consider it as the day of ‘killing of freedom fighters'.
