Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, on Saturday demanded that the work of the National Consensus Commission be completed within the months of June and July.
He remarked that the government should not require more than a month to complete the ongoing reform tasks.
He made the remarks after paying tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital as part of the party’s 21st founding anniversary program.
Saiful Haque said the Revolutionary Workers Party has stood firm for the past 21 years in every democratic movement in Bangladesh—fighting for the rights of working people, for public entitlement, for the defence of national independence and sovereignty, and for the protection of national resources.
“Many of our comrades have been martyred, injured, or lost their lives in this struggle. We have also faced numerous lawsuits and legal harassment along the way,” he added.
He said the Revolutionary Workers Party has been one of the few parties to consistently take to the streets against what he described as Awami fascist rule.
“Even after November 28, 2023, when many feared police repression and avoided the streets, we stood our ground. We declared that we would oust fascism, and we have kept that promise,” he said.
He added: “During the July mass uprising, our leaders and activists remained on the streets, were injured, and some even lost their lives. We must protect the achievements of the uprising at all costs.”
Regarding the interim government, he said: “We told them to stay on the right path. We said the process of justice must be strengthened.”
He added: “Just as we seek justice for the war criminals of 1971 and will not allow them to go unpunished, we also demand justice for those responsible for killings during last year’s uprising. We urge the government to ensure justice is visible and effective.”
He further said: “You’ve already taken a long time with the reforms. We hope the National Consensus Commission will finish its work by June-July.”
He also said: “Effective steps must be taken to ensure all political parties can sign the July Charter. The tasks currently in your hands should not take more than a month to complete.”
During the event, he also prayed for the souls of those martyred from 1971 through to the July–August uprisings and condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran.
