AG: Aslam Chowdhury can contest future election if disqualification is removed

The attorney general said a person's disqualification is not permanent

Update : 30 Jun 2026, 12:44 PM

Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal on Tuesday said BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury would be eligible to contest a future election if the legal grounds for his disqualification no longer exist, despite the cancellation of his candidacy in the 13th parliamentary election.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at his office on the Supreme Court premises after the Appellate Division delivered its verdict.

The attorney general said a person's disqualification is not permanent.

"He was unable to enjoy the election result because of a specific disqualification, namely loan default. If that disqualification is removed and he becomes eligible under the law before the next election, there should be no legal obstacle to his participation," he said.

Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division, led by the chief justice, upheld the cancellation of Aslam Chowdhury's candidacy in the 13th parliamentary election from the Chattogram-4 constituency.

Lawyers said the verdict means his election result cannot be published.

Aslam Chowdhury was declared elected in the February 12 election, but the publication of the result had remained suspended following a court order.
