Nur demands resignation of Chief Prosecutor Tajul of ICT

  • Tajul misuses power for personal financial gain
  • Concern raised over Tajul compromising the mass movement’s impartial outcome
Update : 14 Nov 2024, 08:13 PM

Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad, along with lawyers from the Lawyer Rights Council, held a protest march on Thursday, demanding the resignation of Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam.

The protest program held at 4:30pm on the premises of the High Court.

In the protest march, members of the Lawyer Rights Council said that Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam receives government benefits.

They questioned how he could support the faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad led by Tarek-Faruk, which has separated from Nurul Haque Nur's registered party, and participate in hearings for illegal writ petitions filed against Nur's Gono Odhikar Parishad at the Election Commission.

They argued that as a recipient of government benefits, Tajul should not be acting against the Election Commission, which is a constitutional body, and therefore demanded his resignation.

Nurul Haque Nur said: "Tajul is misusing his power to earn money, which is why he has instigated former party members who were not elected to positions in the council to file writs against us in court. By doing so, he is attempting to discredit the Gono Odhikar Parishad for his political gain, which in turn discredits him as well."

Nur questioned the integrity of Tajul, saying: "As Chief Prosecutor, he cannot stand against a government institution. He is compromising his principles for monetary gain, which raises doubts about the impartiality of his calls for punishment or life sentences for allies of the Awami League. There is concern that he may compromise the results of this mass movement for political purposes, potentially discrediting the court and the government."

Nur warned that if Tajul is not removed, the Lawyer Rights Council, with support from lawyers, students, and the public across the country, will organize protests to compel him to resign.
