Coordinator Masud: Criminals must never hold public office in Bangladesh

He criticized Awami League for denying voting rights for 16 years

Update : 09 Nov 2024, 06:56 PM

Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has said that no individual involved in criminal activity should ever be allowed to hold a political position, such as an MP or Minister, as they undermine democracy and the nation's stability.

He said: "Today, many are showing sympathy towards fascists. Some say the Awami League is a political party, and they should have the right to do politics and vote. If the Awami League is a political party, then why have they denied the people’s right to vote for the past 16 years? If they are a political party, why have they killed over two thousand of my brothers and sisters? Why have ordinary students been tortured on campuses for the last 16 years? If you can’t distinguish between a terrorist and a political party, we’ll consider you don’t belong to the political party category either. Terrorists remain terrorists for life. No terrorist will ever be allowed to become a member, chairman, MP, or minister in this country. Terrorists and political parties can never be the same."

He said these on Saturday at a ceremony held at Joyag College Ground in Sonaimuri, Noakhali, organized by a foundation to honour the families of those killed and injured in the July Revolution.

Masud further said: "If the Awami League is a political party, then why has it denied the people’s voting rights for so long? We had to fight for our right to vote and for democracy. Therefore, the constitution promoting Mujibism and fascism must be abolished immediately."

The coordinator said: "Fascist Hasina has repeatedly altered the constitution, stripping the people of their rights to food, votes, and life. That constitution will be discarded, and a new one will be written with the guidance of young people in 2024, along with advice from experts."

The event was presided over by Captain Golam Kibria, founder of the Dr Mostafa Hajera Foundation, and was attended by several other prominent figures.
