Md Rakibul Islam Rakib, president of the Chhatra Dal, has said Chhatra League has been banned under a law enacted by the Awami League, its parent organization.

The Chhatra Dal chief made the statement on Friday in Kuakata while distributing leaflets containing the 31-point state-restructuring plan presented to the nation by BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

"For the past 15 years, Chhatra League has been involved in criminal activities on campuses, torturing innocent students, and various other crimes, leading the current interim government to ban them. The Awami League itself enacted the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009. Now, they have been caught in their own legal trap," Rakib said.

In response to a question from journalists, he said Chhatra Dal no longer believes in displaying banners, festoons, or asserting dominance. "We are determined to introduce a new kind of politics and change the terrifying political situation. Activists who did not leave the streets despite being persecuted by the Awami League for the past 15 years and who stood by their fellow members even after witnessing deaths will be valued."

The leaflet containing Tarique Rahman’s restructuring plans includes the formation of a constitutional reform commission, establishment of an inclusive state identity, creation of a national coordination commission, and 29 other measures the party says are aimed at restoring people's rights.

The interim government banned Chhatra League, the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, on Wednesday for its involvement in killings and destructive and terrorist activities, both directly and through incitement, during the July revolution.
