Update : 31 Aug 2024, 06:52 PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the public to hand over anyone engaging in extortion while falsely claiming affiliation with the BNP to the police.

“BNP has no connection with any extortion activities,” he said while speaking at a brief gathering during a relief distribution event in the flood-affected area of Chhoto Sharifpur in Lalmai Upazila, Comilla, around 11:45am on Saturday.

He also addressed recent news reports that have damaged the image of the BNP, saying: "The BNP has no involvement in such activities that tarnish the party's reputation."

Calling for vigilance among the public, Mirza Fakhrul said: "There are attempts to undermine the victory achieved through the mass uprising of students and the public. Efforts are being made to create division among us. Everyone must remain alert."

Mirza Fakhrul also spoke about the newly formed government, saying: "The new government has been in power for only 20-22 days. We want to give them time. We are in discussions with the government to ensure they create an environment conducive to free and fair elections. We need to give the new government a chance.

“If we can hold a proper election and transfer power to a government elected by the people, only then will public trust be restored. Therefore, we have asked this government to create the conditions for a fair election and to hand over power to a government chosen by the people," he added.

The brief discussion event was presided over by BNP Chairperson's Adviser Monirul Haque Chowdhury and was attended by BNP Organizing Secretary Professor Selim Bhuiyan, BNP Relief and Rehabilitation Secretary and Comilla South District BNP Convener Haji Aminur Rashid Yasin, among others.
