Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has questioned why there should be objections to politicians engaging in business.
"Why can't politicians have businesses just because they are involved in politics? Should they resort to extortion to support their families? There is no issue with honest business practices. We maintain zero tolerance for dishonest businessmen and corrupt individuals."
He made the comments in Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday.
Regarding the party’s 75th founding anniversary on Sunday, Obaidul Quader said: "Our message is nothing new. We have given our party's election manifesto and we will implement it. It is important to bring prices under control and bring inflation under control, this is our commitment.”
The 75th founding anniversary of the ruling Awami League, which led to achieving the country's independence through the 1971 Great Liberation War, will be celebrated across the country on Sunday.
The party was established on June 23, 1949, as Awami Muslim League at Rose Garden in the capital's old part. But, later it became Bangladesh Awami League to have a secular look.
The Awami League is one of the oldest, non-communal, and leading political parties in the country. The work of building a non-communal Bangladesh was first initiated by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
