Greeting the people on Eid-ul-Fitr, Opposition Leader in House GM Quader has said that the country is facing an economic debacle and the people in villages are living amidst severe hardship.
“So, we need to stand by the poor and share the joy of Eid with all,” he told reporters after saying Eid prayers in Rangpur city on Thursday morning.
Quader, chairman of a faction of the Jatiya Party (JaPa), demanded that the government ensure fair prices for the farmers’ produce.
“The people are being oppressed in different ways. The government doubled fertilizer prices, citing impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic, though the prices dropped by a half globally,” he said.
“The prices have yet to be curtailed, pushing up production costs. However, farmers are not getting fair prices.”
He continued by saying that city dwellers pay exorbitant prices for vegetables. “Syndicates involved in the price monopoly are making a quick buck while depriving farmers of fair prices.”
Regarding the forthcoming upazila elections, Quader said that they would join the polls fray with their party symbol, plough.
The JaPa leader, however, suspects that voter turnout in the elections will not be “normal.” The government, he insisted, should ensure participatory polls.
“If all political parties do not contest an election, it cannot be termed satisfactory,” he opined.
