Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said “the election train” will not stop until it reaches its destination no matter how many hurdles come its way.
He made the comment at a press briefing at the Awami League president's political office in Dhanmondi in the capital.
Although the BNP is not participating in the election as a party, their 15 central leaders and 30 former MPs will contest the upcoming polls, said Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister.
After many days, a festive atmosphere is prevailing across the country centring around the polls, he added.
The participation of the people is more important than the participation of two or one political parties, Quader said.
TIB or Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJON) has nothing to say about the violence and terror that the BNP is carrying out in the country in the name of its movement, but they talk about democracy and human rights, said the Awami league leader.
Quader said elections are held despite the absence of opposition parties in many countries including those in Europe, Africa, and Latin America. “No one considers those elections illegal there! It cannot be said that an election will be invalid if one or two parties do not come to the polls if the participation of the people is guaranteed.”
Regarding independent candidates of the Awami League, he said the party will observe the issue till December 16.
Regarding GSP benefits from the European Union, he said tension in a relationship is not unusual, adding that: “We need them and they need us as well.”
