Law enforcers on high alert in Gopalganj over Awami League founding anniversary

Six people have been detained so far

Update : 23 Jun 2026, 12:35 PM

Security measures have been strengthened in Gopalganj amid fears of possible unrest surrounding the founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned.

Fearing that the occasion could trigger unrest or lead to a deterioration of law and order, police have detained six people affiliated with the Awami League and Chhatra League in Kashiani and Mukshudpur.

To keep the situation under control, the army has been deployed alongside police and Ansar members.

Security patrols have been increased at sensitive locations across the district, and law enforcement agencies remain on alert.

So far, the overall situation in the district remains calm. No reports of any breach of peace have been received from anywhere.

Deputy Commissioner Md Arifuj-Zaman said that the law-and-order situation in Gopalganj remains calm. He noted that the army has been deployed alongside the police force to handle any situation that may arise.

All activities of the Awami League and its associated and affiliated organizations were banned on May 12, 2025, on allegations of killings, crimes against humanity, and other offences during the July uprising.
