Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday came down hard on the members of Bangladesh Chhatra League criticizing them for lack of discipline.
“Discipline yourselves and be organized,” Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said while speaking at the annual joint conference of the Dhaka north and south units at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
“We do not want this Chhatra League. This is not the Chhatra League of Sheikh Hasina or Bangabandhu. One doesn't become a soldier of Sheikh Mujib just by wearing a Mujib Coat. In order to become a soldier of Mujib one must follow the ideologies of Mujib,” he told the rally.
Several senior party men were not given adequate time to speak during the program yesterday while the two top leaders of the BCL spoke for an hour each.
A leader of the BCL was delivering a speech at the time when Quader reached the venue around 12 noon.
Quader was enraged after his name was announced as the chief guest without giving the senior AL leaders a chance to give a speech.
Presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque left the stage as soon as the announcement was made.
Quader said Nanak and others could not address the rally as the BCL leaders did not finish their speeches on time.
"Why did you invite them?” Quader asked. “Everyone has become a leader. Those who are not in the committee – send them outside [the rally venue].
“You don't release the microphone once you get hold of it. Other people will also speak, you don't remember that. Today is the day of Jummah, you don't remember that either. We do not want this BCL."
He said that the organization must bring back its lost glory through good deeds.
