Two new and one renovated bridge - Kanchpur, Meghna and Meghna-Gomti was inaugurated on Sunday, reducing the the journey from Dhaka to Chittagong to just five hours.
“The three bridges will also make it possible to travel from Dhaka to Chittagong within 4-5 hours and will ease the transportation of goods,” said Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader.
Quader was speaking at a program in Meghnaghat in Sonargaon of Narayanganj district, while visiting the recently built Kanchpur-Meghna-Gumti 2nd bridge.
He opened the newly renovated 1st Kanchpur-Meghna-Gumti Bridge as chief guest.
The minister also thanked the Japanese government as the project was finished six months before the deadline, saving Tk1,388 crore.
He explained that each of the three bridges, built with Japanese government aid, have four lanes, in keeping with modern standards.
"This is part of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s plan of pushing the country towards development," he continued.
Quader, also Awami League’s (AL) general secretary, said: “Dr Kamal Hossain’s remark of kicking the government out at the BNP rally is undemocratic and resembles street talk. A person of his reputation cannot speak like this. He has crossed the limit.”
“Law enforcement will give a befitting reply if BNP commits any terrorist acts in the name of protests,” said the minister.
Regarding Khaleda Zia’s bail, Quader said the decision is up to the courts as the case was not filed by the Awami League government.
“BNP themselves are responsible for the delay. The case could have been settled long ago if they appeared in court timely,” added Quader.
Earlier on Saturday, at a program arranged by Jatiya Oikya Front at Dhaka Reporters Unity, Dr Kamal said: “There’s no point in requesting this government to resign. We must kick them out.”
