Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has told party leaders that Awami League is like a family and everybody has to be ready for any kind of sacrifice for the betterment of the party.
She said this while addressing the last meeting of the ruling party's current Central Working Committee (CWC) ahead of the party’s 21st National Council at Ganabhaban last night.
The council is scheduled for December 20 and 21.
Seeking anonymity, more than three CWC members, who attended the meeting, told Dhaka Tribune that Sheikh Hasina through her speech hinted that the upcoming council will bring some changes at the party top brass.
However, they said she did not say anything regarding changes in the general secretary post.
The meeting mainly focused on the preparations for the council.
During the meeting, the reports submitted by the sub-committees formed to organize the council were approved by the party chief.
"No major changes in our declaration and constitution have been made before the council," a joint general secretary told Dhaka Tribune.
Party insiders have said minor changes will be made in Awami League's declaration, including two chapters regarding the celebration of Mujib Year and 50 years of independence next year.
During the later part of the meeting, Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif gave a brief speech, where he summed up Sheikh Hasina’s activities and achievements in the last three years.
The meeting, which Sheikh Hasina presided over and was attended by almost all CWC members, had started around 6:20pm and was adjourned around 10pm on Wednesday.
After the inaugural session, the committee sat for a closed-door discussion.
In her opening speech, Hasina said that the meeting would continue until the council scheduled for December 20 and 21.
After adjourning on Wednesday, the meeting will resume again on December 21, the second day of the council, she said. In that session, the present central committee will be disbanded.
"After that, the councillors will form an election commission and elect the new Awami League leadership. Then a new Central Working Committee will be formed," she said.
A three-member election commission, which will conduct the sessions of the National Council, was also formed at on Wednesday's meeting, with Yusuf Hossain Humayun as the chief election commissioner, and Dr Moshiur Rahman and Dr Saidur Rahman Khan as election commissioners.
Party sources said that around 7,737 councillors from all over the country will exercise their right to elect a new leadership through the council for three years.
