Samajtantrik Chhatra Front – a left-leaning student body backed by mother party Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) got its new leaders after the fifth central council on Wednesday.
Al Kaderi Joy was made the president and Nasir Uddin Prince was made the central general secretary of the body.
Shamol Barman was introduced as the vice president and Rukhsana Afrose Asa as the organizing secretary among the 21-member executive committee of the body.
Earlier, the faction of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front urged Dhaka University (DU) authorities to reduce the cost of higher studies.
Comrade Khalequzzaman, general secretary of the faction of the leftist party, made the statement after the inauguration function of the fifth central council in front of the Aparajeyo Bangla sculpture at the DU campus on Wednesday.
He also urged the university authorities not to overcharge students for higher studies.
Khalequzzaman said: “I urge the DU authority to bring back the quality of the university that it once had in the golden era.”
After the inauguration, party activists carried out a procession around 1:15 pm, to mark the council’s commencing day.
Leaders and activists from the units of different districts and educational institutions also joined the council.
Earlier, around noon Selina Akhter, mother of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, who was killed during anti-Ershad movement, said: “Since independence, the educational institutions have become increasingly controversial for various reasons. Instead of education, students are getting engaged in immoral activities like tendering and extortion.”
“I will say it is not the students' fault, but our responsibility to give them proper knowledge. The so-called politicians have tempted the students to do illegal things to fulfil their agendas. The current situation is miserable. We have to get over this situation as soon as possible,” she added.
