Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has blamed an internal feud in the AL for his defeat in the mayoral polls of Comilla city.
“We have suffered in the Comilla City Corporation (CCC) election because of the internal feud in the party in Comilla,” Hanif said in his speech as chief guest at the third founding anniversary of Bangladesh United Islami Party held at the Engineers' institute in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.
He said that action will be taken against party members who are only looking out for their own self-interest and caused the defeat at the CCC polls, and added that none will be spared.
Hanif also said local factions often affect the results of such elections, which is what happened in this poll.
The AL leader asked the organisation's secretaries to look into the reasons behind this defeat. Stating that the party’s discipline is of foremost importance, he further said: “Anyone causing the party any trouble due to his own self interest will not be tolerated.”
At the CCC election on Thursday, Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Monirul Hoque Sakku defeated AL candidate Anjum Sultana Sumi to become mayor.
Hanif also said the election result is not an indicator of AL's popularity as a party and that BNP should participate in the upcoming national election.
He also criticised BNP for making allegations against the new election commission and said: “BNP launched baseless allegations against the new EC. If any of these allegations are true, how did the voters cast their vote in a peaceful environment at the CCC election?”
