Information Minister Hasan Mahmud has said that the mass media is working independently and the government has taken various initiatives to ensure media freedom in the country.
“The publicity for BNP is more on television and radio, and in newspapers than Awami League’s. The ruling AL does not get as much coverage in the media as the BNP, despite the party staying outside the parliament,” Hasan said, replying to a query from a journalist after attending a function at the Bangladesh Film and Television Institute (BFTI).
Earlier, the minister addressed a certificate distribution and prize-giving ceremony as the chief guest at BFTI in the city’s Darus Salam area.
Information Secretary Abdul Malek addressed the function as the special guest, with BFTI Chief Executive Mohammad Azharul Haque in the chair, reports BSS.
Referring to BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s remark that they do not get publicity on television for more than two seconds, Hasan said that Fakhrul had been saying that on TV for nearly an entire minute.
“They talk and brief the media twice almost every day, but they claim that they are not allowed to talk,” the minister added.
