Info minister emphasizes information literacy to combat rumors, fake news at EWU conference

  • Govt does not censor media, minister says
  • Urges people to be cautious while using social media

A three-day international conference on Information and Knowledge Management organized by the Department of Information Studies of East West University (EWU) has been held on the university campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka.

Almost 300 participants from 11 countries, including Bangladesh, attended the conference, reads a press release issued on Saturday.

The inaugural session of the Conference was held at the Manzur Elahi Auditorium, EWU on Friday evening. Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud attended the program as chief guest.

Dr Hasan Mahmud said the government does not create any kind of obstacle or censorship for the press and media. “The government believes in the free and independent flow of information. But how the media is responsible for that is questionable.”

In addition, he urged people to be cautious while using social media. According to him, a lot of rumours and fake news spread through these channels. Therefore, he emphasized that the public needs media and information literacy to find out what is true.

Professor Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, pro-vice chancellor, EWU, chaired the session. Gillian Oliver, professor, Monash University, Australia, delivered the keynote Speech. Dr Dilara Begum, chairperson, Department of Information Studies, EWU, also spoke on the occasion.
