Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader says the BNP is resorting to submitting complaints to foreign countries after its defeat in the 11th parliamentary elections.
He also termed BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir a defeated politician.
Quader made the comments at a press conference on Saturday, held after a party meeting at the Awami League central office at Gulistan in the city.
"People have rejected the BNP and it has no option but to complain to foreign countries. We want to thank the BNP for participating in the elections," he said.
Thanking the people for voting Awami League to power, Quader added: "I want to express my gratitude to the people of this country, and the Election Commission, who made the free and fair election possible."
The Awami League leader,saying that the ruling party is united and there is no conflict among party leaders,continued: “We achieved a massive victory as we could show a stronger unity through excellent coordination under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.”
The Awami League general secretary further said party president Sheikh Hasina’s strong stance against evil and communal forces also helped them get an unforgettable victory in the election.
The minister said the party will celebrate their victory by holding a grand rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 19.
At the beginning of the meeting, one minute of silence was observed to pay homage to the party’s former secretary general,Syed Ashraful Islam.
Four days after being elected MP to the 11th parliament, Awami League Presidium member and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam died of lung cancer at a hospital in Thailand on Thursday night at the age of 67.
Awami League joint general secretaries Mahabubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak ,and Abdur Rahman were present at the press conference, among others.
