Police detained three leaders and foiled processions of the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) on Thursday in Satkhira and Naogaon when they were heading to siege the Election Commission's office with a view to hold a free and fair general election.
Police held three LDA leaders in Satkhira town when a procession of the alliance headed towards the Election Commission office around 1:30pm.
The arrested are Nittananda Sarker, coordinator of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), and its members Khagendranath Sarker and Proshanto Kumar Roy.
When the procession reached the Election Commission office from Satkhira Press Club, the police stopped them.
As the activists tried to move forward ignoring the barriers, the police used batons to disperse them and held the three leaders.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira model police station, said the three were arrested for anti-government activists.
Naogaon police foiled an attempt in Naogaon of the Left Democratic Alliance to lay siege to the Election Commission with a view to holding free and fair national elections.
Leaders and activists of the district unit of the LDA brought out a procession in the Muktir Mor area of Naogaon around 12pm to step up their demands, including the next general elections under a caretaker government, with a view to holding a free and fair election.
The police foiled the march when it came close to the Election Commission office in town.
Later, alliance members held a meeting in town.
Among others, Mohosin Reza, district unit president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, and Joynal Abedin Mukul, coordinator of BSD, addressed the function.
