Countering BNP’s claim that the proposed budget for 2018-19 fiscal year would not be beneficial to the people of the country, Awami League leaders on Friday said the new budget was pro-people and people living in poverty in particular would be benefited by it.
Speaking to reporters on Friday morning, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said although implementing such a huge budget would be a big challenge, the Awami League-led government has the capability to do it.
“BNP is only opposing the budget because it’s good. They oppose and criticize anything without proper understanding,” he further said.
Refuting BNP’s allegation that the new budget is not people-oriented, Awami League leader and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed
said the budget is indeed pro-people, and definitely not election-oriented.
“The Awami League government did not prepare this budget keeping in mind that it is the election year,” he told reporters. “BNP is opposing the budget without understanding it.”
Senior Awami League leaders said the party was fulfilling election-time promises through the budget.
Some of the mega projects, which were promised by the Awami League in its election manifesto, were given the highest priority in the proposed budget.
The ruling party presidium member Faruk Khan said: “Our election-time promises were fulfilled through the new budget and the ongoing mega projects will be implemented through this budget.”
He further said common and poor people would be benefited by this budget.
