The namaz-e-janaza of former Chief Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim was held on Saturday after Zuhr prayer at the Inner Guard premises of the Supreme Court in the capital.
The janaza was attended by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, justices of the Supreme Court, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, senior advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, and other prominent members of the legal community.
Earlier, Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed in a statement that Mohammad Fazlul Karim passed away at 4:43am on Saturday at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital. He had been undergoing treatment for age-related illnesses.
Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed and Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul expressed profound grief over his demise and extended their condolences to the bereaved family.
To honour the memory of the former chief justice, the Supreme Court has announced the suspension of judicial proceedings on Sunday. However, administrative activities at the Supreme Court Registry will continue as usual.
Born on September 30, 1943, Mohammad Fazlul Karim earned his LLB from the University of Dhaka and completed his Bar-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn, UK, in 1969.
He was appointed a justice of the High Court Division on November 1, 1992, and later joined the Appellate Division on May 15, 2001.
He served as the 18th Chief Justice of Bangladesh from February 8, 2010, to September 29, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the judiciary.
