Voting has begun in the two-day election for the 2026-2027 term of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The first day of voting started at 10am on Wednesday at the association auditorium and will continue until 5pm, with a break from 1pm to 2pm.
According to the election rules, polls are being held for 14 executive committee posts, including president and secretary. A total of 40 candidates are contesting in the election, while 11,097 lawyers are eligible to vote.
From the BNP-backed Blue Panel, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon is contesting for president. Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan are running for the two vice-president posts, while Mohammad Ali is contesting for secretary and Md Ziaur Rahman for treasurer.
Maqsud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul are contesting for the two assistant secretary posts.
The panel’s candidates for member posts are AKM Azad Hossain, HM Sanjid Siddiqui, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia, Ripon Kumar Barua and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.
From the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Sabuj Panel, Abdul Baten is contesting for president, while Abdul Haque and Moinuddin Farooqui are contesting for the two vice-president posts.
AKM Rezaul Karim Khandaker is contesting for secretary, SM Jahangir Alam for treasurer, and Md Tariqul Islam and Jobair Ahmed Bhuiyan for the two assistant secretary posts.
The panel’s candidates for member posts are Azim Uddin Patwary, Farzana Khanam, Israt Jahan Ani, Md Faizullah, Md Zubair Titu, Mahmudul Hasan and Mohammad Naeem Uddin Lincoln.
Meanwhile, the NCP-backed Red-Green Panel has not nominated any candidate for president. However, Ajmal Hossain Bachchu is contesting for secretary, while Mustafa Asghar Sharifi is contesting for one of the two assistant secretary posts.
Amina Akhter Lovely, Kazi Akbar Ali, Md Boni Amin and Mazharul Islam are contesting for member posts from the panel.
Apart from the panels, Yunus Ali Akand is contesting for president, while Farhad Uddin Bhuiyan, Md Abu Yahia Dulal, Md Omar Faruk and Md Ashraf Uz-Zaman Khan are contesting for secretary. Md Jobair Tayeb and Tapan Kumar Das are contesting for member posts.
A subcommittee headed by retired High Court Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury has been formed to conduct the election.
