Taj Hashmi joins Dhaka Tribune as weekly columnist

Renowned historian and security expert Dr Taj Hashmi has joined Dhaka Tribune as a weekly columnist, contributing his extensive academic and global experience to the newspaper. 

Dr Hashmi, who has spent over five decades studying, teaching, and writing on topics ranging from modern South Asian history to global security, is expected to provide deep analyses of contemporary geopolitical and social issues.

Born in 1948 in Assam, India, and raised in Bangladesh, Dr Hashmi has a long and varied academic background. 

He holds a PhD in modern South Asian history from the University of Western Australia, and both a master’s and a bachelor’s in Islamic History and Culture from Dhaka University. 

He has held numerous academic positions across the globe, from teaching Islamic History at Dhaka University and Chittagong University in the 1970s, to holding prominent roles in institutions in the US, Canada, Australia, and Singapore.

Dr Hashmi’s career highlights include being a professor of Security Studies at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he worked with both the US Department of Defense and the State Department. 

His teaching and research focus has encompassed history, terrorism, counter-terrorism, and security issues related to South Asia, the Middle East, and North America. 

He has been a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society since 1987 and is frequently called upon to review manuscripts for leading publishers such as Oxford and Routledge.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr Hashmi is a prolific author and commentator. 

He has authored five books and numerous papers, with notable publications including “Fifty Years of Bangladesh, 1971-2021: Crises of Culture, Development, Governance and Identity” and “Global Jihad and America: The Hundred-Year War Beyond Iraq and Afghanistan,” the latter of which has been translated into multiple languages. 

His work on “Women and Islam in Bangladesh: Beyond Subjection and Tyranny” also received significant attention and acclaim, winning the Justice Ibrahim Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh.

Dr Hashmi’s expertise is sought after by major media outlets, and he regularly comments on global affairs for platforms such as the BBC and Voice of America. 

His columns in Dhaka Tribune are expected to delve into complex topics ranging from regional geopolitics to the evolving dynamics of Islam in the modern world.
