The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have suspended a student and formed an investigation committee following allegations that he made derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Facebook.
The decision was announced in an urgent press release issued on Monday by Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin, acting director of the university’s public relations office.
The suspended student, Toufiq Islam Nabil, is enrolled in the Department of Geography and Environment under the 2020-21 academic session (50th batch).
According to the press release, Nabil posted comments on social media that insulted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), thereby hurting religious sentiments under Section 295(A) of the Penal Code of Bangladesh.
Acting on this, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan ordered his suspension under Section 4(1)(b) of the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Disciplinary Ordinance.
The statement further said that, under Section 2(g) of the 2018 Disciplinary Ordinance, a committee has been formed to investigate the allegation of “misconduct” and submit a report with recommendations.
The committee is headed by Professor Dr Md Shamsul Alam, acting dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
