A child was killed in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a private car in Gopalganj on Wednesday in front of the Sky Blue Restaurant at Daserhat in Muksudpur upazila, along the Dhaka-Khulna Highway.
The deceased, 5, was the daughter of Rafiur Rahman, a resident of New Eskaton Road in the Bangla Motor area of Dhaka, confirmed Bhanga highway police station officer-in-charge, Rakibuzzaman.
Four other passengers in the private car were seriously injured in the incident, the OC added.
The injured are the child’s father Rafiur Rahman, 45, mother Nusrat Jahan, 37, and two brothers aged 4 and 10.
Muksudpur fire service leader Wahiduzzaman Khan said that Rafiur Rahman was driving the private car with his wife and children from Dhaka to Khulna.
"When they reached Daserhat in Muksudpur upazila, a Sohag Paribahan passenger bus coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with their vehicle. The car was severely crushed in the impact," he said.
Wahiduzzaman added: "Upon receiving the news, a team from Muksudpur fire service rushed to the scene and rescued the five injured individuals from the wrecked vehicle. They were taken to Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex."
Medical officer Manash Bhattacharya, on duty at the emergency department of the health complex, declared Sayba Zaira dead.
The others were sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
OC Rakibuzzaman said the child’s body is being handed over to the family without an autopsy, following a request from the family and completion of legal procedures.
