A five-year-old child was killed in a gunfight between armed groups at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Thursday evening.
The child, identified as Mojahed, sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the firing. His mother Tahera Begum and 6 others were also injured.
The gunfight took place around the B-40 and B-41 blocks of Camp-8 East at Kutupalong.
Police initially suspect that the gunfight took place between members of the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA) and the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO).
Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman, deputy commander of the 8-Armed Police Battalion (APBn) assigned to Ukhiya, disclosed the incident on Friday morning.
Police and local sources said gunfire suddenly began in the camp on Thursday evening. More than 100 gunshots were heard, prompting many people to leave their homes and seek shelter.
Mojahed, son of Nur Alam, a resident of Camp-8 East, was rescued in critical condition and taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment.
Among the seven injured, three were women, including Mojahed’s mother. Some of the injured were transferred from Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
A drive is underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
