Ashulia imam arrested over comments on Khaleda Zia

Md Ebadul Islam arrested in case filed under Cyber Security Act by local Jubo Dal leader

An imam has been arrested by Ashulia police for allegedly making offensive, indecent, and insulting remarks about BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The arrestee, Md Ebadul Islam, 31, who serves as an imam at a mosque in Ashulia, was transported from Ashulia police station to a Dhaka court in a prison van on Tuesday morning, with a plea submitted for a seven-day remand.

He was arrested late on Monday night in Uzirpur, Barisal.

According to Ashulia police, Ebadul allegedly made offensive, indecent, and insulting comments directed at former prime minister Khaleda Zia in the comment section of a Facebook page that published a news post regarding a joint initiative of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and the BNP last Saturday.

The remarks were noticed by Md Ataur Rahim, senior vice president of Ward No 6 Jubo Dal (the youth wing of the BNP) in Dhamsona union, Ashulia, while browsing Facebook on Saturday afternoon.

Ataur later filed a case under the Cyber Security Act 2023 at Ashulia police station on Monday night.

Ashulia police station Inspector Md Kamal Hossain confirmed that the case had been filed under the Cyber Security Act 2023 over the offensive remarks.
