A separate cyber security unit will be formed next week, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Saturday.
“If a post for an additional inspector general of police does not already exist at Police Headquarters for this purpose, we will create one,” he said.
The minister was speaking at a police medal distribution ceremony in the capital.
He said branches of the new unit would be established at metropolitan, divisional and district levels.
“Police stations and district offices will be equipped with modern cyber security tools. Large-scale forensic laboratories and other necessary support facilities will be established at the headquarters and divisional levels,” he said.
The minister said he had issued directives several weeks ago to formulate a project plan for the initiative.
“Complex cases will be referred to the central unit, while cases that can be analysed at the police station, district or divisional levels will be handled locally,” he said.
“Crimes committed in cyberspace are a characteristic of modern criminal trends. In some countries, up to 44% of crimes are cyber- or scam-related. Therefore, we must attach great importance to this issue,” he added.
