A case was filed by police over a violent clash and over 100 hand bomb explosions in Jazira, Shariatpur, reportedly linked to a long-standing power struggle between two groups, with eight people, including UP Chairman Kuddus Bepari arrested so far.
The matter was confirmed on Sunday at 11am by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jazira Police Station, Dulal Akhand.
According to local sources and the police, there has been a long-running dispute over local dominance between supporters of Bilaspur Union Parishad Chairman Kuddus Bepari and Swechchhasebak League leader Jalil Madbar. Several clashes have occurred in the past. On Saturday morning, another clash broke out in the Durbadanga area over a minor incident. During the clash, houses were vandalized, and over 100 hand bombs were detonated. At least 16 people from both sides were injured.
The injured were admitted to the local Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
After receiving the information, police and joint forces rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Following the incident, a sub-inspector from the local police filed a case at the station, naming 88 individuals and accusing around 1,000 unidentified people.
OC Dulal Akhand confirmed that eight people have been arrested so far. Seven were arrested by Jazira police, while the main accused, UP Chairman Kuddus Bepari, was arrested by RAB in Barishal. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused.
