A doctor was airlifted to Dhaka in critical condition after an attack on the emergency department of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital late Friday night, triggered by the death of a patient, leaving at least five people injured.
The deceased, Lal Mia Kazi, 50, of Uttar Bilashkhan in Shariatpur Sadar, was admitted to the emergency unit around 10:30 pm on Friday with chest pain. He died at around 1:00 am on Saturday while undergoing treatment.
Soon after the death, around 1:15 am, his relatives reportedly became agitated and vandalised the emergency department, assaulting on-duty staff and damaging hospital property.
Among the injured were on-duty physician Dr Md Nasir Islam, Ansar member Sohel Sardar, and staff members Kamrul, Azizul Haque and Kawser, all of whom sustained serious injuries.
Dr Nasir Islam, who was critically injured in the attack, was later airlifted to Dhaka by air ambulance as his condition deteriorated.
The incident sparked panic across the hospital premises. Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, detaining one suspect, Al Amin, in connection with the attack.
Residential Medical Officer Dr Mitu Akter said the violence broke out suddenly after the patient’s death, leaving several injured, including a doctor in critical condition.
Superintendent of Police Raunak Jahan said law enforcers acted promptly to restore order. “One person has been taken into custody. Investigation is underway and no one involved will be spared,” she said.
District Commissioner Tahsina Begum described the attack on hospital staff as deeply unfortunate and said strict action would be taken against those responsible.
Shariatpur-1 MP Saeed Ahmed Aslam said attacks on healthcare facilities are unacceptable and those involved will face legal consequences regardless of identity.
