Yunus laments Sandwip’s transport woes

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus says new ferry route will ensure safe travel, especially for children, elderly, and those in poor health

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has expressed regret over the absence of an effective transportation system in Sandwip, an island in Chittagong, even after 50 years of independence.

Speaking at a gathering on Monday after launching a Chittagong-Sandwip ferry service, Yunus said despite the development of cities and ports, the people of Sandwip have had to endure "medieval" methods of travel, particularly when it came to accessing healthcare or basic transportation, reports Bangla Tribune.

He said that this long-standing issue is finally being addressed, adding that the new ferry route will ensure safe travel, especially for children, the elderly, and those in poor health.

The chief adviser also mentioned ongoing initiatives to improve infrastructure, such as the declaration of Sandwip as a river port, the opening of the Kumira-Guptachhara terminal, and the establishment of bus services to Dhaka. "These efforts aim to reduce the hardships faced by Sandwip residents."

He also praised the economic contributions of Sandwip's people, particularly in sending remittances, and urged them to work towards the development of their local communities.

Yunus expressed hope that Sandwip would lead the way in Bangladesh’s progress through balanced and inclusive development.
