Police have recovered the bodies of an unidentified man, woman and newborn from a locked flat in a four-storey residential building in Ashulia, Savar, in what they suspect was a planned murder.
The bodies were recovered from a flat on the second floor of a building owned by Haji Hazrat Ali in the central Jamgarh area of Ashulia at around 1:30am on Saturday.
The identities of the deceased could not immediately be confirmed.
Locals said a couple had moved into the flat as new tenants on August 9. The doors and windows of the flat were usually kept closed.
On Friday, locals detected a strong foul smell coming from the flat and informed Ashulia police. Police later arrived, broke open the lock and recovered the decomposed bodies.
A CID forensic team visited the scene to collect evidence. Senior officials from the Dhaka North Detective Branch (DB) and Ashulia police station also inspected the scene.
Ashulia police station Officer-in-Charge Tariqul Islam said law enforcement agencies had not yet been able to identify the deceased.
“Multiple teams are working to identify the deceased and determine what happened, as well as identify those involved,” he said.
The bodies are being sent to a hospital morgue for autopsies, the OC said.
“Based on the initial investigation and evidence, we suspect this may have been a planned murder,” he added.
Police said the man was found with a towel wrapped around his neck.
