A young man named Zakir Hossain, 26, has been detained by the police for vandalizing idols inside a temple in Raipur, Lakshmipur.
He was held from Char Mohona village on Friday evening.
On Thursday at 9pm, the vandalism took place at the Shri Shri Mahamaya Temple in the Murihata area of the town.
The police are interrogating the detained youth and plan to present him in court on Saturday morning.
Biswanath Saha, the general secretary of the temple committee, said that after completing the evening puja rituals on Thursday, the temple priest left.
Later that night, upon returning, he found the idols inside the temple damaged and informed the local Hindu community. Upon arrival, they saw the idols in a broken state.
CCTV footage revealed that a young man, with his face covered, entered the temple, vandalized the idols, and left.
Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan said that the accused youth was arrested following an operation after the idol vandalism incident.
The police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the destruction of the idols.
