Khadija Akter, 25, who suffered severe burns in a gas leak explosion in Chandpur’s Koralya area, has died while undergoing treatment. She passed away early Friday at the Female High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The incident took place on Sunday in the early hours of the morning when Khadija went to the kitchen to heat food for Sehri on the fourth floor of Jakir’s building. A gas stove leak caused a massive explosion, leaving six members of the same family with burn injuries.
All six victims were taken to the burn institute in Dhaka—four were admitted initially, followed by two more later.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident doctor at the institute, confirmed that Khadija had suffered 85% burns, which led to her death.
Among the other victims, Shahnaz Begum (20% burns), Abdur Rahman (18% burns), and Mohim (15% burns) are still receiving treatment. Meanwhile, Hossain Sardar and Nusrat Jahan Niva, who sustained minor burns (3% each), have been discharged after receiving primary care.
Authorities are yet to provide further updates on the cause of the explosion.
