Miscreants set fire to a Grameen Bank branch in the Bagadi area of Chandpur Sadar upazila late Friday night, damaging furniture and other belongings.

Branch Manager Mahmuda Akter said the miscreants broke the glass of a second-floor window and threw a bottle-like object filled with petrol inside before setting it on fire.

“Furniture and other belongings worth around Tk 2 lakh were burned. We have filed a complaint with the police station over the incident,” she said.

Bank office assistant Nitya Hawladar said they noticed the fire spreading through a window at around 3am on Friday night and left the room. The Fire Service was subsequently informed, and its personnel arrived and brought the fire under control.

Mahmuda Akter filed a complaint with the police station on Saturday afternoon. Later that afternoon, a police team, including Chandpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman and Additional Superintendent of Police Khairul Kabir, visited the scene.

Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Foyez Ahmed said police were investigating the incident to identify those responsible and determine the motive.

“An investigation is underway to determine who set the fire and why the incident occurred. CCTV footage of the incident is being collected,” he said.
