DSCC to file cases, seize goods from footpath shops

The announcement came during the DSCC’s weekly Cleaning Day program, held across all 75 wards

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has warned of immediate legal action and confiscation of goods from shops illegally occupying roads and footpaths, saying repeated warnings are over.

He made the announcements on Saturday during a special mosquito-control and cleanliness drive marking the DSCC’s weekly Cleaning Day program, held simultaneously across all 75 wards, said a press release.

Salam said illegal hawkers and makeshift shops contributed to traffic congestion, indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of pedestrian movement. “There will be no scope to occupy roads and footpaths in the name of humanitarian considerations,” he said, adding that shops operating outside designated rules would face legal action and confiscation of goods.

He further said the DSCC would launch another eviction drive in the New Market area next week, stressing that hawkers would not be allowed to set up shops on roads.

Emphasising cleanliness as essential to dengue prevention, Salam said stagnant water must not be allowed to remain for more than three days. Awareness campaigns and rallies would continue to help protect the environment, control air pollution and ease traffic congestion.

Regarding the removal of a secondary transfer station (STS) from in front of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office in Malibagh, he said it had been relocated at the CID authorities’ request, and the site had been converted into a parking area.

Construction of a new STS to manage waste from the surrounding area is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of this month, he added.
