Students of Jahangirnagar University have blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, demanding the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, accusing him of failing to ensure women's safety, control robberies, and address terrorist activities across the country.
The students staged a symbolic blockade on the Aricha-bound lane of the Dhaka-Aricha Highway near the university's main gate on Monday around 12:15pm.
This caused a halt in traffic on both lanes of the highway until the blockade was lifted around 12:30pm.
Earlier, the students gathered at the base of the university's Shaheed Minar and held a protest march.
During the march, students chanted slogans such as: "One, two, three, four, Jahangir's resignation," "One demand, one resignation of Jahangir," and "Give the price for the blood of July, or leave the chair."
Arifuzzaman Ujjol, the convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement of Jahangirnagar University, said that after the July uprising, one of the public's main expectations was to ensure people's safety.
However, the home affairs adviser has failed to protect people's lives and property.
Abdur Rashid Jitu, the convenor of the People's Uprising Protection Movement, said: "After August 5, we had high hopes for the formation of the government. We expected our mothers and sisters could travel safely at any time, and we hoped to conduct business without fear and move around securely. But since August 5, the sector that should have been given the most attention has been neglected.
“Now, we see murders, robberies, and rapes happening across the country. We want to tell the home affairs adviser that he should resign due to his failures, or else we will force him out of his position."
