A leader of the Swchasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of the BNP, was fatally shot in Fatullah, Narayanganj Sadar upazila, early on Friday.

Mamun Hossain, 42, joint convener of the local thana Swchasebak Dal, was reportedly shot in front of his brick and sand business near the Purbalalpur railway line.

According to the victim’s elder brother, Amjad Hossain, Mamun was sleeping at home when unknown individuals called him outside.

They took him in front of his business establishment, Maa-Babar Ashirbad Traders, where he was shot and killed before the assailants fled, Amjad said.

Hearing the gunshots, Amjad said he rushed out of the house and found his brother lying lifeless.

He was taken to the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur, where doctors declared him dead.

Amjad demanded the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for his brother’s murder.

Azad Mia, the business manager, said Mamun went gone home after overseeing the loading and unloading of bricks, sand, and cement at around 2am.

Fatullah model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam said there were injuries around the victim’s eye.

It is unclear whether they were caused by gunfire or another form of attack; the post-mortem will confirm, he added.

"Initial investigations suggest the murder might have resulted from past enmity," the officer said, adding that the body has been sent to the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators, Shariful said.
