Police have arrested Md Abdul Wahab, the president of the Sujanagar upazila Awami League and former upazila chairman, who was previously snatched from police custody in Pabna.

The arrest took place on Wednesday morning in Mathurapur Bottola, at the residence of one Ansar Sarkar in Vaina union of the upazila.

Wahab, also a former municipal mayor, was a fugitive in multiple cases related to attacks on students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement last year.

Sujanagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa said that based on intelligence reports, police conducted a raid and arrested Wahab along with another individual.

Meanwhile, local sources claim that after being forcibly taken from police custody, Wahab later contacted law enforcement himself to negotiate the terms of his surrender.

Following these discussions, he reportedly surrendered voluntarily after the Fajr prayer, leading to his arrest and subsequent transfer to the police station.

Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, police had initially arrested Wahab at the Mathurapur High School field in Sujanagar municipality.

However, immediately after his arrest, Awami League activists attacked the police vehicle, chanting "Joy Bangla" slogans, and managed to snatch him away.

During the incident, eight police personnel were injured.

The following day, a case was filed, naming 64 individuals and accusing an additional 200-300 unidentified persons. Police subsequently launched a crackdown and arrested 11 suspects.

In response to the incident, activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP held separate protest rallies.
