An intense cold wave has gripped all eight districts of the Rangpur Division, with temperatures plummeting to 8°C in Tetulia.
The chilling winds have significantly intensified the cold, bringing daily life to a standstill.
The severe cold has left people struggling to cope.
According to the Rangpur Meteorological Department, the lowest temperature in the region was recorded at 9am on Friday in Tenulia, Panchagarh district, at 8.3°C.
Following this, the temperatures were recorded as 9°C in Thakurgaon, 9.5°C in Rajarhat of Kurigram, 9.7°C in Rangpur, 10.1°C in Syedpur of Nilphamari, 10.1°C in Dinajpur, 11°C in Dimla of Nilphamari, 10°C in Lalmonirhat, and 10.7°C in Gaibandha.
The meteorological department has reported that a mild cold wave is ongoing.
The significant reduction in the difference between the minimum and maximum temperatures has caused this situation, accompanied by dense fog.
For the past three days, people in this region have not seen the sun.
Mustafizar Rahman, assistant meteorologist at the Rangpur Meteorological Department, said on Friday morning that the cold wave might persist throughout the week, with the temperature potentially dropping further.
Mild to moderate cold waves are expected to continue throughout the month.
Meanwhile, the ongoing cold wave has severely disrupted daily life.
The region has not seen sunlight for three consecutive days.
The biting cold wind has made the cold unbearable, and people are avoiding going outside unless necessary.
The cold is more intense in rural areas than in urban centers.
People are trying to keep warm by burning straw and other materials.
The most affected are the homeless and impoverished families, who are enduring harsh conditions due to a lack of warm clothing.
According to complaints from those suffering in the cold, no government initiative has yet been taken to distribute winter clothing.
On the other hand, cold-related illnesses are spreading widely.
