Samples have been collected from two accused detained in Rangpur Central Jail for dope tests in connection with the killing of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family in Rangpur city.
The samples were collected from Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das on Sunday afternoon, Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty confirmed.
The two accused are currently detained in Rangpur Central Jail.
Earlier, two technologists from Rangpur Medical College went to the jail with a team led by Inspector Jinnat Ali, the investigating officer in the Ganapati Chakraborty murder case.
After obtaining permission from the jail authorities, the technologists collected samples from the two accused for the dope tests.
Jinnat Ali, also an inspector of the Metropolitan Police DB, said the court had approved the application for the tests.
“After the court approved the application for the dope tests, we went to the jail to collect samples from the accused. For security reasons, it is not possible to take the accused outside the jail. Therefore, technologists from the Rangpur Medical College laboratory were taken to the jail to collect the samples,” he said.
Rangpur Medical College technologist Mohammad Ashraf said urine specimens were collected from the accused for the dope tests.
“The samples will be sent to the laboratory for testing,” he said.
Sanatan Chakraborty, spokesperson for Rangpur Metropolitan Police and deputy commissioner of the DB, said the murder case was highly sensitive.
He said there was a possibility of an attack on the accused or a mob forming if they were taken outside the jail.
“For this reason, the principal of Rangpur Medical College was requested. Later, the technologists were taken to the jail and the samples were collected,” he said.
Four family members killed
On the night of August 22, police recovered the bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, daughter and son from a locked house in the Machuapara (Daspara) area of Rangpur city.
Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das, neighbours from the same area, were subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Kotwali police station.
The accused have given confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to the case information.
The case is currently being investigated by the police’s Detective Branch.
